In addition to news of the upcoming 2021 Supra !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with the same drivetrain as the Z4 30i to the USA, there are a bunch of updates to the straight six version as well. Uh oh.

Toyota has revised the power numbers of the six cylinder Supra to be identical to the US-spec Z4 M40i: 382 hp instead of the 335 hp spec on the 2020 Supra . At first I thought this was just a change on paper as the dyno numbers and drag times of the 2020 Supra are basically identical to the Z4 M40i, and it’ll run the 1/4 mile in the low 12s which is a stretch for a 3400ish lb car with “only” 335 hp. B ut the 2021 motor gets a new exhaust manifold and lower-compression pistons. One would think that lower compression ratio maybe means more boost, but who knows. Not a ton of specifics yet.

Suspension changes include:

Aluminum bracing in the engine bay between the strut towers and radiator support

New bump stops

Re-tuned dampers

New calibrations for the electric power steering, adaptive dampers, stability control and eLSD

My guess is these handling changes were done in response to reviewers who called out some instability issues on fast roads with big bumps.

Also, the infotainment screen has been bumped from a 6.5" screen to an 8.8" one. Initially the Supra launched with an older version of iDrive, supposedly because Toyota prefers older tech for reliability. No word on if it’s just a bigger screen or also an upgrade to iDrive 7.0 like the Z4 which !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! through an OTA update in July. Best info I could find here is there will be a new Safety and Technology Package that includes active cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors with emergency braking, navigation, JBL 12-speaker stereo, and wireless CarPlay.

G ood luck selling those 2020 models, Toyota.

I haven’t seen one on the road yet but I have seen two at dealers. The numbers I have seen are about what you would expect, a bit better than the BRZ/GT86 but not setting the world on fire.

Im just here to say wireless carplay sucks. When I’ve used my moms 2019 Cooper S it frequently will skip several seconds or pause. The closest thing I can relate it to is when I go over a bump in my 1995 530 and the CD player skips lol, its infuriating.

Total step back from a wired or bluetooth connection

I’ve actually been loving my wireless CarPlay experience. I do think a lot of the work is on the phone, so you probably need a well-functioning (read: new) iPhone for it to work well. I got a brand new phone at the same time as my car so I could get wireless charging and go completely wire-free and it’s been good. Pretty much every time it disconnects I’ve traced back to me being in a few particular intersections where my phone picks up a wi-fi network it thinks it recognizes. I blame Apple but I feel like most people blame BMW because they’re the only ones that have been doing wireless CarPlay for a while. Haven’t heard from any Audi or MB users.

I saw one on the road over the summer on my way back home to DC from the beach. It was either the eastern shore of Maryland or around Annapolis. I can’t remember which side of the Bay Br idge I was on. Haven’t seen any since.

BMW for whatever reason only supports wireless carplay and a ndroid auto. Even though their cars have plenty of USB ports, those ports don’t work for carplay or AA. It's especially irritating on the Android side because only a very limited number of phones have wireless support.

And it was more than just the 20hp, the 2002-04 have less issues long term.  On top of that, it dropped the quarter mile by a solid chunk.

Here’s my deal. For a state that thinks it’s so goddamn “organized” and with a intellectual “tech corridor” stretching from Hopkins to NSA to APL in Hanover to the Navy Labs at The Yards... can’t somebody (anybody) get it together enough to organize the bridge approach? Geezus H. Krist.

The jam, on a summer Friday would regularly stretch ALL the way back past Annapolis, past Parole, sometimes all the way to the Beltway. Those poor tech execs, spooks and spies and government functionairies— all backed up for HOURS to get to the toll booth. And in the last hundred yards it becomes obvious there is no system to align for lanes, optimize flo w through the tollbooth, even process multiple tolls AT THE SAME TIME in a single lane. It’s must a massive crush of lane changing, cutting each other off for the few open lanes... in the last few hundred feet before the toll booth!! For the millions of dollars in tolls it generates (it subsidizes every other money-losing bridge in the state) you’d think the a-holes could at least optimize the process for extracting the money.

And, yeah, I refused to get on the subscription (which, at least at that time, required an ongoing monthly charge minimum, in addition to the buy in... all of which made no sense to a part time resident.) for EZ-Pass which was incompatible with the other EZ-Passes in other places I was working...

But, yeah, I’ve never seen such a needlessly disorganized mess as that fucking bridge on a Friday (and Sunday) afternoon.

Kinja'd!!! ranwhenparked > SBA Thanks You For All The Fish
02/13/2020 at 21:04

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s exactly the problem - a few lanes split into many for the booths, then combine back into two again without enough space or proper markings to accomplish it. Add in the fact that they’re repaving the decks, so one bridge lane is going to be permanently out of commission for the next couple of years, and that just makes it worse.

They have wised up a bit, after the first few abysmal rush hours when the redecking project started, I believe they are now closing all the toll lanes except the ones that correspond to the travel lanes and running EZ Pass and toll-by-plate only during the peak travel times, so cars can shoot straight through.

Why its going to take 2 years to repave an existing bridge deck that isn’t even in bad shape to start with is maybe another question, when, for example, China can build an entire nuclear power plant in only twice that time from scratch is maybe another question; but I get that we should be glad that at least one piece of infrastructure in this country isn’t being neglected until repairs become an urgent emergency.

But, the bottom line is that the bridges were built to handle current and projected traffic demands as of the 1950s and 1970s, and there’s a lot more people living on the Eastern Shore and commuting over to Baltimore and DC, a lot more people in Baltimore and DC coming over to vacation at the Maryland and Delaware beaches, and a lot more people from Baltimore and DC with second homes or boats on the Eastern Shore.

The bridges as they stand now are probably just about adequate for normal volumes on the average day of the year, assuming there’s no other issues like construction or a car accident, and are below adequate for the peak summer travel season.

You also have the total morons who think they can jump the line of traffic by getting off 301 at Kent Narrows, taking back roads across Kent Island, and then hop back onto 301 at the last minute to head over the bridge. All that does is completely clog up every road on the island as bad or worse than 301 itself. Hint, it isn’t a shortcut if everybody knows about it.

Is a 128 gigabyte iPhone 11 from November new enough haha?

MB is only wired connection (I sell them) but it never cuts out. They have wireless charging but the car play must be wired. They typically like to make sure stuff is tried and true before they bring it out so I’d suspect that’s why.

I haven’t driven the mini enough to really know when it cuts out but it really bothered me earlier this week haha. In my 95 I expect it and am okay with it because it’s part of the CE experience and I have coilovers so they face a rough task, but in a brand new Mini it’s disappointing.

On the plus side though who really cares because goddamn is that car a blast. I got her a good deal on a Dinan exhaust (Only 480!) and it’s a six speed cooper S and it’s tons of fun. I’m not typically a FWD guy but growing up I learned to drive stick  on her older first mini (she’s on her 5th now). Have a big mini soft spot

My experience was always that it would take hours to get from Arnold to the toll booth— pay— then shoot at full speed across the bridge since the idiotic “take the money” part was so inefficient that it ended up being the only bottleneck.

I’d complain more but Caltrans is (finally) widening a four mile section of the 101 in my fair city. My son was a high school freshman when they started. He’s a senior in college now and it’s still not done. To add... ONE SINGLE LANE. In most states it would have been a three-month project, not 8 years.

I actually miss certain things about Annapolis.  Urban BBQ.  City Dock Coffee.  The Cars and Coffee over along the waterfront.  BWI--  an epic great airport, by any standards.

This hopefully will improve sales, because I live in a place where a lot of people drive and buy the most newest stuff, and I think I may have seen only one of these on the road so far.

If it wasn’t for the internet, specifically Youtube car channels & auto websites , I wouldn’t know this car existed.

BMW sucks at technology. Sure now they have all the ridiculous luxury features but they’re the worst at phone mirroring and even the best modern built-in nav isn’t as good as Google Maps. I give my E92 a pass for having crap old useless iDrive where the bluetooth always auto-connects to my phone but most of the time no sound comes out until I switch to aux then back to bluetooth. B ecause the whole car is slightly crappy but likable anyway.

Yeah, I keep reading how “Tesla killed the 3-series”, seemingly without recognition that the 3-series was a suicide as everybody is buying CUVs and SUVs.... the 3-series was killed by the X3 and X1. And, if few are buying 3-series coupes, let me point out that NOBODY is apparently buying Z4s.

I’ve yet to see one anywhere-- and this town is filled with BMWs./

Ive seen two on the road in Philadelphia. Only other one was when I stopped by my local speed shop RT Tuning where they have one theyre messing with. Looks cool for sure and its a great car in a vacuum, but if I was in the market for a new ish sports car Id be going with a ton of other options. Idk if theres any 19 manual Vettes leftover but Id take that all day, or a Camaro. And this is from a BMW fanboy who owns 3 BMWs lol

There are a lot of cars that have certain years you dont want. Like if you want a 2000s SL, never buy an 03-06. Terrible electronics, way less reliable, and many of them pull to the right no matter how many alignments or suspension parts you replace chasing it. Whereas if you get an 07 they can be amazing reliable cars that are kinda expensive but arent going to constantly be at the shop.

Or the C4 Corvettes with that weird manual trans everyone hates and first year engine

Wait, an auto manufacturer made improvements to a vehicle between model years? OMG! What’s next? Dell making a computer more powerful next year ? Samsung improving their televisions? When will it end?

P.S. Just in case you don’t get it, that was entirely sarcastic. This article is ridiculous with a click-bait headline. Improvements happen. Deal with it. Don’t buy the first model year of a vehicle.
